Die spätesten Jahrescharts der Welt – jetzt erst recht!

Wer zu spät kommt, den bestraft das Leben. Wenn das stimmt, ist dem HIT-The-Bassline-Blog die einschlägige Höchststrafe sicher. Denn musikalische Jahresbestenlisten mit größerer Verspätung als die unseren wird man nirgends finden – selbst wenn Jahrescharts-Debütant Johannes die seinen schon am 2. Juni (und damit für die Verhältnisse dieses Blogs in geradezu atemberaubendem Tempo) vorgelegt hat.

Warum man sich unsere persönlichen Top 100 und die dazugehörigen Spotify-Playlists (siehe unten) trotzdem zu Gemüte führen sollte? Weil 2016 ein ausgesprochen spannendes und facettenreiches Musikjahr war, das an den meisten Hörern ohnehin viel zu schnell vorbeigerauscht ist. Und weil gute Musik ja nicht gleich an Qualität verliert, nur weil ein paar Monate vergangen sind.

Soviel zu den alljährlichen Ausreden. Und nun zu ein paar Beobachtungen, was meine persönliche Lieblingsmusik 2016 betrifft:

Zuallererst sticht ins Ohr, dass ein Großteil der – meiner Ansicht nach – besten und relevantesten Songs auch 2016 von Musikerinnen stammten, seien es nun Solokünstlerinnen oder Bands bzw. Projekte, in denen Frauen den Ton angeben. PJ Harvey, Agnes Obel, Prince Rama: Sie würden bei mir auch die Albencharts anführen. Neue, (mir) bisher noch unbekannte Stimmen (OY, Deep Throat Choir, Goat, Tuff Love, Tacocat) wussten ebenso zu überzeugen wie erfahrene Sängerinnen (Lucinda Williams, Marianne Dissard). Und geniale, gewitzte Songschreiberinnen à la Courtney Barnett oder Regina Spektor können scheinbar ohnehin nichts falsch machen.

In Summe stammen mehr als die Hälfte meiner Top 20 von Musikerinnen oder female fronted bands. Und Namen wie Sophia Kennedy deuten schon jetzt drauf hin, dass dies auch in den Jahrescharts 2017 wieder der Fall sein könnte.

Was weiters auffällt: Diverse Nummern, die sanft an der Kitschgrenze entlangschrammen (case.lang.veirs, Bat for Lashes, Cullen Omori …), hatten bei mir diesmal ziemlich gute Chancen. Hat das mit der Weltlage zu tun? Mit der persönlichen psychologischen Großwetterlage? Ist die Suche nach einlullenden, melancholischen Melodien letztlich eine Form von Weltflucht?

Zumindest letztere Frage würde ich mit einem klaren Ja beantworten. Der sogenannte Eskapismus ist meine Meinung nach generell eines vom Wichtigsten und Wertvollsten, was Musik erreichen kann. Das hat nichts mit Realitätsverweigerung oder Nichts-ändern-wollen zu tun – aber gute Musik zeichnet sich eben vor allem dadurch aus, dass man darüber die Zeit (und die Außenwelt) vergisst. Und das ist oft verdammt viel wert.

Apropos Zeit: „Catherine The Great“ von The Divine Comedy, meine – bei den Bloglesern sicher nicht unumstrittene – Nummer eins, könnte mit ihrer klassischen Eleganz und ihren nostalgisch-schwelgerischen Harmonien gut und gerne auch in den 50er Jahren oder gar in der Prä-Rock-n-Roll-Ära entstanden sein (wäre da nicht der saukomische, skurril-postmoderne Text). Klar, das klingt natürlich alles andere als progressiv oder avantgardistisch. Aber: Kein anderes Lied hatte ich in den letzten Monaten so oft im Ohr, im Hirn und auf den Lippen wie diesen perfekten kleinen Popsong – und das zählt für mich am meisten.

Als eine etwas anders gelagerte Ausdrucksform des Eskapismus könnte man übrigens auch eine ganze Reihe von ausufernd-hypnotischen, sanft narkotischen bis unheilvoll dröhnenden Nummern nennen, die sich in den Jahrescharts ebenfalls wiederfinden (Mamiffer, Esben & The Witch, The Swans, King Gizzard, Black Mountain, Goat).

Ganz und gar nicht eskapistisch, sondern meist sehr direkt und oftmals explizit politisch kam 2016 der (US-)Hip-Hop daher, der auch in der Liste des Blog-Kollegen Johannes auffällig stark vertreten ist. Rap als soziopolitisches Sprachrohr erlebt in brisanten Zeiten wie diesen offenbar eine starke Renaissance. Musikalisch klangen dabei nicht nur die erfahrenen, experimentierfreudigen Alternative-Hip-Hopper (A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Aesop Rock …) erfreulich frisch, sondern zum Teil auch der kommerzielle Mainstream-Rap (Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Rae Sremmurd etc.).

Apropos Texte: Generell gilt zwar It’s the music, stupid!, textliche Inhalte sind im Grunde zweitrangig. Aber 2016 war auf jeden Fall ein Jahr der besonders starken Botschaften, der äußerst gewitzten bis pointierten Texte, zumindest aber der bemerkenswerten Zeilen, die im Kopf bleiben. Also habe ich in der untenstehenden Top-100-Liste bei einem Großteil der Songs markante, zitierfähige oder poetische Textzeilen angegeben (soweit mir diese zugänglich bzw. verständlich waren, Patzer oder Hörfehler nicht ausgeschlossen).

Abschließend, bevor es dann endlich ans Eingemachte geht, noch ein paar Worte zur seltsamen Aufgabe des Listenerstellens, des Songs-nach-ihrer-Güte-Reihens. Ich habe mich darüber kürzlich mit Bloggründer Dave unterhalten, der mit unverhohlener Skepsis in etwa Folgendes fragte: „Kannst du wirklich sagen, dass Platz 20 besser ist als Platz 25 – oder Platz 80? Ist das nicht total willkürlich??“

Ich wies diese ketzerischen Zweifel natürlich kategorisch zurück. Inzwischen bin ich mir aber nicht mehr ganz so sicher: Denn verglichen mit den vergangenen Jahren ist es mir diesmal wirklich deutlich schwerer gefallen, die Lieder zu reihen – sogar die Top 10. Die Plätze 2 bis 6 könnten im Grunde auch in jeder beliebigen anderen Reihenfolge angeordnet sein, auch die Nummern zwischen ca. Platz 10 und ca. Platz 30 gefallen mir diesmal alle in etwa gleich gut.

Und was können wir daraus schließen (abgesehen von einer besorgniserregenden Entscheidungsschwäche meinerseits)? Hat es zuletzt wenig Herausragendes gegeben? Oder eher doch sehr viel Gutes? Die Antwort auf diese Frage hängt vom Grad des eigenen Kulturpessimismus ab – die folgende Liste sollte aber doch sehr viele klangvolle Entscheidungshilfen bereithalten:

Die spätesten Jahrescharts des Universums Teil 2(017) – Die Rückkehr

Wahnsinn ist es definitiv. Ob es dennoch Methode hat und ob sich Shakespeare beim Schreiben von Hamlet solch ein Spätzündertum wie das unsere ausmalen konnte, sei dahingestellt. Zu dieser Extraportion Langsamkeit und Prokrastination passt Faulheit wie die Faust aufs Auge, deshalb übernehme ich direkt die Kernaussage vom Vorjahr: Während seriöse Musikjournalisten allerorten schon an ihren Halbjahresbestenlisten 2017 feilen (wir schreiben seit zwei Tagen schließlich schon Juni!), kommt der Spätzünder-Blog HIT The Bassline JETZT mit den Top-100 für 2016 ums Eck …

An legitime Ausreden glaubt hier schon lange keiner mehr, stattdessen also lieber ein paar Worte zur Musikauswahl, die das längst vergangene Jahr so hergab. Ein Musikjahr, dessen Geschichten und Geschehnisse gefühlt so stark von Verlust geprägt waren wie kaum ein Jahr zuvor. Kaum ein Monat ohne Schläge in die Magengrube in Form von Todesfällen namhafter bis legendärer Akteure des globalen Musikgeschehens, und nicht bloß bei Bowie und Cohen passierte es nur kurze Zeit nach Erscheinen neuen Materials des Künstlers. Ein Umstand, der viele Neuerscheinungen – und auch solche, die sonst vielleicht nicht ganz so viel Beachtung gefunden hätten – in ein völlig eigenes Licht tauchte. Und damit auch ein Umstand, den man unmöglich ausblenden kann, wenn man sich der ohnehin irgendwo seltsamen Aufgabe annimmt, Musik in eine Rangliste zu stopfen.
Für mich persönlich war es ein Jahr voller Gegensätze. Während der Entdeckergeist nicht nachließ und wie jedes Jahr ein paar Schritte mehr in Richtung abstrakter, experimenteller Musik gewagt wurden, habe ich gleichzeitig auch mehr gefälligere, poppigere Sachen gehört als sonst. Ersteres ist in den Charts hier nicht wirklich ersichtlich, da diese Musikrichtungen meist eher nicht auf Songbasis funktionieren, letzteres hat hier aber definitiv Spuren hinterlassen.

In dem Sinne war es für mich auch sehr interessant, zum ersten Mal eine Topliste aus Songs zu erstellen. Ich klaube schon jahrelang meine Favoriten des vergangenen Jahres zusammen, aber eigentlich immer als Albumcharts. Die Herangehensweise beim Zusammenstellen der Lieblingssongs war überraschend anders. Man wird sich erst bewusst, welche Alben echte „Album-Alben“ sind, deren Songs sich erst im Kontext entfalten und für sich alleine nicht viel Aussagekraft besitzen. Deshalb ist von einigen meiner Lieblingsalben kein Stück in der Liste vertreten. Umgekehrt finden sich dort aber auch Lieder aus Alben wieder, die es niemals in meine eigentlichen Bestenlisten schaffen würden.
